Glass glasses washed in the dishwasher will start to look worse over time. Instead of a shiny, pristine surface, we see milky white residue and unsightly streaks. What is the cause of this? In this article, we will explain why glass becomes dull and reveal a simple way to restore it to its former shine.

Why are the glasses frosted?

A dishwasher primarily facilitates work in the kitchen. In addition, it saves water and cleaning agents, while at the same time significantly shortening the time required for cleaning the kitchen. Although it has many advantages, it does not always produce the results we want. The dishes taken out of the dishwasher are most often really clean, so there are no traces of drinks on them, but a milky white coating is visible on them. Why are the glasses frosted? They lose their luster for several reasons:

  • Hard water – unfortunately, most of us have medium to very hard water, and this is the main culprit of glass fogging. It contains minerals that settle on the surface of the glass;
  • Cleaning agents – using the wrong dishwashing detergents or using too much of them also causes the glass to become dull;
  • Wrong program – if you want to wash glasses in the dishwasher, you should not choose a long washing program at a high temperature (maximum 60 °C for washing and 65 °C for rinsing);
  • Glass type – not all glasses are suitable for the dishwasher. It is worth checking whether the manufacturer recommends manual cleaning.

Clouding of the glass can be prevented. But what to do with dishes that have long since developed an unsightly matte coating? Old glasses that have been washed often in the dishwasher will shine again if you reach for an inexpensive product in the kitchen cabinet.

A way to clean dirty glasses

Dirty glasses can be quickly restored to their lost luster and made to look like new again. But first, find out if only hard water and detergent deposits are covering the glass. You can then proceed to cleaning, but please note that this procedure will not remove permanent damage such as scratches. To test if it works on your glass, simply dampen a cloth in rubbing alcohol and then rub it over the frosted surface. If the residues disappear, we can soak all the dirty dishes in a vinegar bath.

How do you clean dirty glasses? We put them in a bowl or sink and block the drain. Pour enough vinegar to cover the dishes. Soak them for 15 to 20 minutes, turning them occasionally. After this soaking, pour out the vinegar and wash the glasses by hand using a mild detergent and warm water. Polish the shiny glass immediately with a microfiber cloth.
