Winter surprised us again – the car windows are frozen and scraping the ice is inevitable. However, many drivers make fundamental mistakes in this routine that can damage the car, cost a fine, and even endanger road safety. So what to do to save time, money and nerves? Read on!

Scraper is essential: Don’t reach for the CD cover!

You cannot do without a quality ice scraper in winter. A good model with a stable material, a grooved side for thick layers of ice and a rubber strip for gentle cleaning costs only a few euros. Even better – choose a scraper with an integrated glove so you don’t have to freeze. What about improvised gadgets like CD covers or credit cards? Better forget about them – they can scratch the glass.

Dirt on the glass? Hidden risk!

Don’t forget to clean the windows before parking. Dirt that freezes can damage the glass when scratched. Make sure the wipers are also clean to prevent further scratches. A simple cleaning with the washers before parking the car in the evening will save you time and nerves in the morning.

Engine started? The law does not prohibit you from doing so, but…

In Slovakia, there is no law that would order the driver to turn off the engine immediately after stopping. However, according to the Road Traffic Act, the driver must not unnecessarily leave the engine running and disturb others with noise or air pollution. If you have the air conditioning or heating on and you’re only waiting a little while, running the engine may be justified.

However, the policeman can fine you 30 eurosif it determines that you are leaving the engine running for no reason. If you sit in a car with the air conditioning on during a hot day or the heating in the winter, you need to be able to defend your decision.

Hot water for ice? Better not!

While hot water may seem like a quick fix, can cause more harm than good. A sharp change in temperature can lead to glass cracking and the water freezes quickly. Use store-bought deicer instead. The combination of a defroster and a scraper will save you time and nerves in the morning.

Smart parking: The east is your ally

You have less work to do in the morning if you park your car with the windshield facing east. The morning sun naturally helps to thaw the frost. If you have a larger car or are shorter, invest in a telescopic scraper that will make your job much easier.

Although winter is beautiful, it also brings challenges to drivers. However, if you avoid the most common mistakes, both your car and your wallet will thank you. Do not underestimate these tips and winter will become a little less difficult for you!
