The former president of Uruguay Jose Mujica He underwent surgery this Friday in which they successfully placed a stent in esophagus, where in April they discovered a malignant tumor who was treated with radiotherapy.
“We did it today because the situation required it at this time. This will allow him to continue feeding orally, continue receiving food as before and maintain his recovery at home,” his personal doctor explained in a press conference. Raquel Pannone.
Meanwhile, he took the opportunity to explain the stent performance.
“It is a prosthesis. A device that is placed inside the esophagus, which self-expands. This device, which is metallic, adheres to the walls of the esophagus and remains there, expanding the lumen of the esophagus and allowing the passage of food,” he explained.
On the other hand, the doctor stressed that the medical team of the person who governed Uruguay in the period 2010-2015 I was betting that fibrosis was not so important and it was not necessary to reach this stage, but in the end it had to be done.
“It was an eventuality, It didn’t mean it was planned. It was a possibility if the clinical situation required it, which is what happened now. The situation required that we do the procedure and the procedure was done at the necessary time,” Pannone said.
He also said that when they placed the device they saw that it was well placed and that it initially fulfilled the intended function: “increase the lumen of the esophagus.”
“Now we need it to finish expanding in the next 48 hours and that’s what we’re going to expect to happen. That is why you will remain here, because this way we can better control the discomfort that the placement of the device may cause,” he emphasized.
Finally, he pointed out that Mujica is “calm and calm” in the same room to which he entered and that he will remain there over the weekend and then return to his home.
On April 29 of this year, Mujica announced in a press conference that he had a tumor in the esophagus.
“I need to inform you that last Friday I went to the Casmu (sanatorium) to have a check-up in which it was discovered that I have a tumor in the esophagus, which is obviously very serious and is doubly complex in my case, because I suffer from a immunological disease more than 20 years ago,” the former president said that day.
A short time later, he noted that the tumor was malignant and had to be treated with radiotherapya procedure that was carried out in Montevideo.
In September, Mujica underwent surgery and had a gastrostomy for food.
