Geraldo Quintão died this Friday (27) at the age of 89. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Quintão was the first long-lived (Advocate General of the Union) in the country. Appointed by Itamar Franco in July 1993, he held the position for almost seven years, until the second term of Fernando Henrique Cardoso, replaced by , now minister of the (Supreme Federal Court).
In a statement, Jorge Messias, current AGU, said that Quintão was “fundamental to the affirmation of the AGU as an essential institution in the defense of the State and Brazilian society”. “His model of leadership and commitment will continue to motivate future generations of public lawyers”, says the text.
After leaving AGU, he was Minister of Defense during FHC’s last three years. “[Quintão] left a legacy of dialogue, balance and defense of democratic values, in the search for the common good and institutional stability”, says the AGU note.
A native of Minas Gerais, with a law degree from USP, Quintão worked at Banco do Brasil for almost three decades. He was a lawyer, head of regional legal consultancy in São Paulo and, later, head of the bank’s general legal consultancy.
