Brazil increases diesel purchases and Russia leads sales

Country imported 1.04 million cubic meters in May; data are from the Secretariat of Foreign Trade

Brazil increased diesel imports by 18.5% in May 2026 compared to April. The data was released by Secex (Secretariat of Foreign Trade) of the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services this Wednesday (June 3, 2026). Russia remained the country’s main fuel supplier.

The volume of Russian diesel purchased by Brazil totaled 1.04 million cubic meters in May – a drop of 5.27% compared to the previous month. The United States is the 2nd largest supplier, its sales to the Brazilian market increased by 259.4% last year, reaching 389.5 thousand cubic meters sold.

Petrobras accounts for around 70% of the diesel consumed in the Brazilian market. The remaining 30% is supplied by imports from different origins.

The conflict in the Middle East, which began on February 28, 2026, intensified the dispute in the oil and derivatives markets. Russia managed to maintain its position as the largest diesel exporter to Brazil even in this scenario.

The European country offers price discounts compared to other international suppliers. This commercial advantage explains Brazilian preference for Russian products.
