The American flag was raised at half-mast at the Capitol on Sunday (29) following the announcement of the death of former United States President Jimmy Carter.
As U.S. president, Carter struggled with a bad economy and the Iran hostage crisis, but brokered peace between Israel and Egypt.
In 2002, he for “his decades of tireless efforts to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, promote democracy, human rights, and economic and social development.”
He died at age 100 at his home in Plains, Georgia, on Sunday, the Carter Center said. The former president leaves behind his wife, four children, 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Final preparations are still pending, according to the Carter Center.
