With the arrival of summer and the increase in rain, the Civil Defense of is intensifying storm warnings and prevention measures. Recently, a heavy hailstorm hit Barueri, in the metropolitan region, causing significant damage. Major Michele César, director of the State Civil Defense response division, explained that these are typical summer rains, caused by heat and humidity, which can be accompanied by winds, hail and lightning. “These are typical summer rains. During the day, the excessive heat and humidity causes rain showers to occur at the end of the day,” said Michele. In addition to Barueri, the cities of Caeiras and Cajamar were also affected.

The situation in Ubatuba is particularly worrying due to the large volume of rain in a short period. Civil Defense issued an alert for the region, highlighting the concern about mountainous and risky areas, where the soil is already saturated, increasing the risk of landslides. “We have a lot of accumulation on both the north and south coast. And, what is the concern? Mountainous areas and the population that lives in risk areas”, explained Michele. Major César emphasized the importance of the population being alert to signs of ground movement, such as tilting of poles and cracks, and following the instructions sent via SMS or cell phone notifications. Cell Broadcast technology allows alerts to be sent to all cell phones in risk areas, regardless of registration.

For the turn of the year, the forecast in São Paulo is typical of summer, with showers in the late afternoon. Civil Defense is monitoring all 645 municipalities in the state, with special attention to regions such as Campinas and Vale do Paraíba. Major César warned of the risks of venturing into flooded areas or trying to remove fallen trees, due to the possibility of exposed electrical wiring. People should avoid uncovered areas during storms and follow safety guidelines.
