A car ran over a crowd during New Year’s celebrations in the city of New Orleans, in the United States, leaving 10 people dead in the early hours of this Wednesday (Dec 1, 2024). Another 35 people were injured.
The case happened on Bourbon Street, which is in the French District, one of the city’s famous streets due to its nightlife and presence of tourists, at around 3:15. , the city’s city hall security agency, warned people to avoid the area.
According to American news website, after the collision, the driver got out of the car and started shooting. The local police responded. It is not yet known whether the suspect has been arrested and his condition.
A local police spokesperson confirmed to that the car was thrown into dozens of people. The authorities have not yet made an official statement.
On social media, images show bodies on the ground on Bourbon Street. One of the videos shows what would be the moment the driver of the vehicle got out and opened fire.
New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick confirmed that two officers were shot by the suspect. They were taken to hospitals and their health is stable. The superintendent also informed that the FBI will take over investigations into the case.
“This man wanted to run over as many people as possible. He was determined to cause the carnage and damage he did”, these Kirkpatrick.
In a statement on American television, the mayor of New Orleans, LaToya Cantrell, called the mass collision “terrorist attack”, although there is still no evidence that this was the case.
“The city of New Orleans was the target of a terrorist attack that is still being investigated. I’m in contact with the White House, with Governor Landry and with the police command here. I am asking the public to stay away from Bourbon Street. The situation is still very recent”, said the mayor.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry spoke about the case on X (formerly Twitter), lamenting what he called “terrible act of violence”.
“A horrific act of violence took place on Bourbon Street this morning. Please join me and Sharon [esposa de Landry] in prayers for all the victims and the people who attended to them at the scene. I implore anyone near the location to avoid the area.”, these.
