economy is on the wrong track for 61% of Brazil

Young people, businesspeople, evangelicals and supporters of the PL are among the groups that most demonstrated dissatisfaction with the direction of the economic scenario

Datafolha research released on Tuesday (Dec 31, 2024) shows that 61% of Brazilians believe that the Brazilian economy is on the wrong path. Only 32% of those interviewed consider the economic trajectory to be positive, while 6% were unable to answer.

Disapproval of the Brazilian economic scenario is most significant among young people aged 16 to 24, reaching 71%. Discontent decreases as the interviewees get older, reaching 55% among those aged 60 or over.

The survey also points out that the negative perception is more intense among those with a higher education diploma, with 68% criticizing the country’s economic direction. The number decreases to 66% among those who only completed secondary education and to 50% among those who only completed primary education.

In terms of income, the highest percentage of people dissatisfied with the economy was recorded by the group that receives 2 to 5 minimum wages: 69%. Disapproval is 67% among those who earn more than 5 minimum wages and drops to 55% among those who earn up to 2 minimum wages.

In terms of occupation, criticism of the economic direction affects 76% of businesspeople, followed by 69% of those employed with a formal contract and 52% of the unemployed looking for a job.

Dissatisfaction is the majority even among those interviewed who receive Bolsa Família from the government (53%). Among those who do not receive the benefit, the percentage rises to 64%.

The survey also noted a marked dissatisfaction among PL (Liberal Party) supporters, with 88% disapproving of the economic management, and among (PL) voters in 2022, with 84% disapproval. Among evangelicals, discontent reaches 71%.

LOW EXPECTATIONS

The survey also points out that 67% of respondents anticipate a worsening of inflation from now on. A year ago, the expectation was 51%. Regarding unemployment, 41% think the indicator will increase.

In relation to the purchasing power of salaries, 39% believe that there will be a reduction, 31% believe that it will continue as it is and 27% believe that it should increase.

Expectations for economic improvement are low. Only 33% of participants expect a more positive situation regarding the economy in the coming months, while 37% believe the current scenario will continue and 28% predict a worsening.

According to the survey, it is the first time since June 2022 that low expectations lead the responses on this issue.

For 45%, there has been a worsening in the country’s economic situation in recent months. A year ago, 35% responded the same. Only 22% believe that the economic situation has improved.

Carried out on December 12 and 13, 2024, the survey took place two weeks after the government announced the –which, according to economists, are– and the dollar reaches .

Furthermore, the interviews were carried out shortly after the Central Bank to raise the interest rate by 1 pp, to 12.25% per year.

The survey interviewed 2,002 people in 113 Brazilian municipalities and has a margin of error of 2 percentage points. The confidence level is 95%.
