Young woman shot in the head by PRF begins to wake up

According to the Adão Pereira Nunes Municipal Hospital, Juliana Rangel’s health condition remains serious, but with progressive improvement

Juliana Leite Rangel, 26 years old, shot with a rifle by PRF (Federal Highway Police) agents on December 24, is beginning to wake up and is already responding to stimulation, according to a medical bulletin released this Wednesday (Dec 1, 2024) . The young woman has been hospitalized at HMAPN (Hospital Municipalizado Adão Pereira Nunes), in Duque de Caxias (RJ), since the night she was shot.

The city hall, through the Municipal Health Department and the hospital management, reported that her health condition remains serious, but with progressive improvement.

The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the skull. According to the medical bulletin released at 11:30 am, Juliana underwent a tracheostomy on December 30th. Since then, sedation and mechanical ventilation have been reduced, and she has presented “good answer” to these changes, says the report.

From a neurological point of view, reflexes are preserved. The hospital says it is not yet possible to carry out a complete assessment of the level of consciousness or determine whether there will be permanent sequelae.

The victim was going with his family of 5 people to spend Christmas at his relatives’ house in Itaipu, Niterói, metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, when the car was hit by several shots fired by PRF agents, near Duque de Caxias, around 9 pm on the 24th, Christmas Eve.
