At least 6 Brazilian capitals start 2025 with higher bus fares. Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Florianópolis, Belo Horizonte, Natal and Recife have announced price increases in recent days. For the majority, the adjustment takes effect in the first days of January. The biggest increase was in the capital of Santa Catarina and the smallest was in the capital of Pernambuco.

Florianópolis

The measure was announced by City Hall on New Year’s Eve and came into effect on January 1st. The new price marks the Most expensive bus fare among all capitals Brazilians.

The price of R$6.90 is valid for payment in cash and QR code. The values ​​vary in cases of use of the Citizen (R$ 5.75), Tourist (R$ 6.75), Vale Transporte (R$ 6.75) cards and if paid by the social tariff (R$ 5.00) , in case of cash payments.

For those who are entitled to the social rate and pay with a card, the prices are: Citizen Card (R$ 3.56), Student Card (R$ 2.88) and Social Student Card (R$ 1.78). In addition, prices for executive transport lines are R$18.00 for the Long Line and R$14.00 for the Short Line.

According to the city hall, the reasons would be the rise in the dollar, the increase in the value of diesel and the return of payroll taxes, determined by the government.

São Paulo

In the capital of São Paulo, the adjustment came into force again when the São Paulo Court which suspended the increase announced by the mayor (MDB) on Thursday (Dec 26). The change is R$0.60. An increase of 13.6%, which will come into effect from Monday (6th January).

Rio de Janeiro

In the capital of Rio de Janeiro, bus fares will increase by R$0.40 from Sunday (January 5th), according to an announcement by the mayor of Rio, (PSD) on Wednesday (January 1st). The new price will be R$4.70.

The mayor stated that it was important to carry out the adjustment annually and said he was equating the price with inflation.

“We are applying [a inflação] period in which there was no adjustment. I always want to remember: the municipality started subsidizing the ticket. It is the municipal budget that is spent if we do not make this adjustment. It is important to have this culture of annual adjustments, yes, so that we do not have the municipality’s budget unbalanced”declared Paes.

Belo Horizonte

In the capital of Minas Gerais, bus fares increased to R$ 5.75 on Wednesday (Jan 1st), as announced by the city hall on Friday (Dec 27th, 2024). The increase was 9.5%. For short lines, the price went from R$2.50 to R$2.75.

According to the city hall, the adjustment is necessary for the “continuity of investments in public transport and improvement of services”. also said that the adjustment considered the analysis of many variables, such as fuel, lubricant, tires, parts and accessories, in addition to personnel expenses, licensing, depreciation and fleet remuneration and taxes.

Natal

In the capital of Rio Grande do Norte, the increase was announced on December 26th and came into effect on Sunday (29th December 2024), through a decree in the DOU (Official Gazette of the Union).

The price of the entire ticket increased by 8.8%, reaching R$4.90. The student and social fare (card only), however, costs R$2.45. In the neighborhood lines, the price of a whole is R$4.30 and a half is R$2.15.

According to the mayor (PSDB), the adjustment equalizes the price of public transport from the city of Natal to João Pessoa, capital of Paraíba. “It had been a year since there had been an adjustment here. (…) It’s a question that if it wasn’t done, companies wouldn’t be able to function.”these.

Recife

The adjustment in the capital of Pernambuco was approved on Monday (Dec 30, 2024) by the CSTM (Superior Metropolitan Transport Council) and will come into force on Sunday (Jan 5). The increase is 4.29%. Thus, the price of the Single Ticket, which unifies Ring A and Ring B, will be R$0.18 more expensive. It goes from R$4.10 to R$4.28.

According to the Council, this value remains below inflation: “In this effort to pass on an index lower than inflation, despite the increase in the value of transport inputs, the government understands that to maintain reasonable tariffs, it must bear a large part of such costs, including exempting ICMS on oil”.

Other announced values ​​intend to correct prices based on inflation. The adjustment would be 7.69%, based on accumulated inflation from March 2023 to November 2024.

With this, the G Ring and the optional and special service lines will go from R$2.69 to R$2.90. The optional lines 041 Setúbal go from R$5.13 to R$5.52, 064 Piedade, 072 Candeias and 160 Gaibu/Barra de Jangada go from R$7.70 to R$8.29. Buses that take you to Porto de Galinhas beach will increase from R$ 13.71 to R$ 14.76 (bus 191) and from R$ 20.03 to R$ 21.56 (bus 195).
