MEC announces expansion of Fies with 112,000 new vacancies

With an investment of R$774 million, the program aims to facilitate access to higher education for low-income young people

The MEC (Ministry of Education) announced this Thursday (2.Jan.2025), the increase in the number of for Fies (Student Financing Fund) for the year 2025. With a contribution of R$774 million, the plan is to make 112,168 new places available over the 2 semesters, distributed in 67,301 for the 1st and 44,867 for the 2nd.

The initiative, regulated by CG-Fies Resolution No. 61/2024 and announced by the Student Financing Fund Management Committee, also includes the offer of vacancies for 2026 and 2027, according to the Fies Three-Year Plan.

The Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, emphasized the relevance of expanding the program. “We will guarantee new places for Fies in 2025, allowing low-income young people to finance undergraduate courses at private higher education institutions in the country”he declared.

The investment will be allocated to the Fies Guarantee Fund, ensuring the sustainability of the program and student financing.

Fernanda Pacobahyba, president of FNDE (National Education Development Fund), also highlighted the positive impact of the MEC measure.

“Fies is a transformative tool, which promotes educational inclusion and opens doors to the future of thousands of young people. With these vacancies, we reinforce our commitment to guaranteeing access to quality higher education in our country”he stated.

Since 2018, Fies has offered zero interest to the most needy candidates, with a financing scale that varies depending on family income. In 2024, Fies Social was introduced, allocating 50% of vacancies to candidates from the Single Registry for Social Programs of the Federal Government and with a per capita family income of up to half the minimum wage.
