Child was shot in the back of the head while watching fireworks in the East Zone; the case was registered as attempted murder
A 9-year-old child was shot in the back of the head by a stray bullet during New Year’s celebrations in the early hours of Wednesday (January 1, 2025), in São Mateus, in the east zone of São Paulo. He is admitted to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) at Santa Helena Hospital, in São Bernardo do Campo (SP).
Matheus Souza was in front of his house with his family watching the fireworks on Avenida Tenente Lauro Sodré, when he was hit on the sidewalk. The moment was recorded by a security camera.
According to the boy’s grandmother, Bete de Souza, who spoke to TV Globothe family initially did not realize he had been shot. Matheus fell to the ground and began to bleed, and was taken to Sapopemba State Hospital.
After receiving stitches at the site of the wound, he was transferred to Vila Alpina Hospital, where a CT scan revealed that the projectile was lodged in his head. According to the family, the bullet hit the spinal cord and could not be removed.
According to the SSP (Public Security Secretariat), the case was registered as an attempted murder in the 69th Police District (Teotônio Vilela).

“All circumstances related to the case are investigated by the 69th Police District (Teotônio Vilela). In the early hours of Wednesday (1st), military police were called to the Vila Alpina State Hospital, where the victim, a 9-year-old child, was admitted with a firearm projectile lodged in the back of the head. The boy’s father reported that they were playing on the sidewalk, on Avenida Tenente Lauro Sodré, east of the capital, at the time of the incident. The child was transferred to Santa Helena Hospital, where he remains hospitalized. Exams were requested from the Legal Medical Institute (IML), and the case was registered as attempted murder in the 69th DP.”
