Meeting between the Prime Minister of Italy and the President-elect of the United States took place on Saturday (4 January), in Florida
The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni (Brothers of Italy, right), had a meeting on Saturday (January 4, 2025) with Donald Trump (Republican Party), from the United States, whose inauguration will be on January 20.
Both met at Mar-a-Lago, the same place where Trump watched the vote count in the last presidential election. According to the agency Reutersboth attended a documentary questioning the criminal investigations facing John Eastman, a former Trump lawyer.
The Italian government later released photos of the meeting, but without giving details about what was discussed. However, Deputy Prime Minister, Matteo Salvini, (ex-Twitter) said that Trump and Meloni spoke on a diverse range of subjects.
“Giorgia Meloni did well speaking to Donald Trump about peace, industrial and commercial collaboration, security and the release of Cecilia Sala. While others in Italy and Europe attack and ignore him, we say Go, Donald, Go!”wrote Salvini.
Cecilia Sala is an Italian journalist arrested in Iran for allegedly “violating Islamic laws”. Sala, who works for the newspaper The Sheet and for podcast production company Chora Media, he had traveled to Iran on December 13 on a journalist visa. According to a statement from the Iranian Ministry of Culture, his arrest was within legal standards and the case is under investigation.
Seen as a potential leader to become Trump’s ally, Meloni visited the president-elect just days before his meeting with the current US president, Joe Biden.
Biden will travel to Rome, Italy, from January 9th to 12th and is expected to meet with Pope Francis, the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, and Meloni.
According to the White House, Biden will speak with Italian leaders “to highlight the strength of the U.S.-Italy relationship, thank Prime Minister Meloni for her strong leadership of the G7 over the past year, and discuss the important challenges facing the world.”.
