All 18 districts of mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago are under yellow warning due to heavy rainfall, and warnings have also been issued due to forecasts of strong wind, snowfall and rough seas. The strong rain and wind recorded in mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago this Sunday is due to the passage of a depression, called Floriane, which will be felt until Monday, warned the IPMA.

“In the coming hours, the continent will be under the influence of a post-frontal air mass, still unstable, associated with circulation of the Floriane depressionwith sometimes heavy showers expected, which may occasionally include hail and accompanied by thunderstorms”, said the , in information released at 4pm this Sunday.

From Monday morning, showers in mainland Portugal should be “gradually less frequent and intense”according to the weather forecast.

Floriane Depression

Floriane, name given by MeteoFrance (French meteorological service), moves along the Atlantic toward the east and at 09:00 it was centered southwest of the British Isles.

The Portuguese institute indicated that depression will “significantly impact” the northern coast of Spain and the Bay of Biscay regionwith strong wind and sea waves.

In mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago, during the night and morning of this Sunday, “the cold front surface effects associated with the aforementioned depression, with precipitation and gusts of wind, sometimes strong“.

In addition to the warning regarding the forecast of sometimes heavy showers in the Portuguese mainland at the end of the day, the IPMA indicated that the wind will sometimes blow strong, with the expectation gusts of around 70 to 80 kilometers per hour (km/h) in Minho, Douro Litoral and the highlands.

According to the organization, “the temperature will drop at the end of todaywith snowfall expected at the highest points of Serra da Estrela”, with the elevation dropping to 1,200 meters on Monday.

During the day, there was also a increased sea agitationwith southwest waves measuring 3.5 to 4.5 meters, changing to northwest waves on Monday, with the yellow warning remaining on the west coast until 6 pm.

Civil Protection recorded, between 00:00 and 12:00 this Sunday, a total of 112 occurrencesincluding falling trees and flooding, especially in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region. At that time, there was no indication of injuries or significant material damage.
