Yellow warnings across the country due to heavy rain and wind, especially in the Algarve

All districts of mainland Portugal are under yellow warning this Sunday due to the forecast of heavy rain, announced the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). This warning includes the possibility of thunderstorms and, in some cases, hail. In the Algarve, the warning covers the entire period between 6am and 3pm, with heavy precipitation and strong winds forecast.

In the district of Faro, the yellow warning for wind remains in force until 3pm, which may affect outdoor activities and cause possible disturbances in exposed areas. Heavy rain, combined with gusty winds, could cause difficulties on roads and in urban areas prone to water accumulation.

Furthermore, the IPMA issued a yellow warning for the entire continental coast due to the forecast of waves that could reach five meters in height. This alert is particularly relevant for the Algarve coastal areas, such as Lagos, Portimão and Tavira, where maritime unrest can impact port activities.

In other parts of the country, the alert extends until midnight in districts such as Viseu, Porto, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga, and until 6pm in Guarda and Castelo Branco due to snowfall, which can affect communication routes.

The yellow warning is the least serious level on a scale of three and is intended to warn of meteorological situations that may pose risks to certain activities or population groups. Authorities urge caution, especially in the Algarve, where weather conditions could exacerbate the risk of localized flooding and damage from strong winds.
