Projections for the United States
Snowfall is forecast for the Midwest of the country, with a focus on the states of Mississippi and Ohio.
This could be the biggest snowfall in a decade in the US. According to the Climate Prediction Center, snowfall could exceed 15 inches (38.1 centimeters), making travel extremely dangerous, with roads impassable in areas of Kansas and Missouri.
Forecasts indicate wind gusts with speeds above 60 km/h. Classified as a “winter hurricane,” the storm will affect the area between Kansas and the Ohio Valley, hitting the Southern Plains and the Atlantic Coast.
Europa
European countries also recorded snowfall this Sunday (5). According to the Met Office, the United Kingdom’s Meteorological Service, several regions of England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland are in a state of alert. In Germany, there are records of snow and black ice.
Impact on flights
Flights were canceled in Germany and the United Kingdom. Manchester airport, the third largest in the United Kingdom, Liverpool and Newcastle were closed due to the storms. Employees are working to clear the runways and allow takeoffs, according to the Civil Aviation Authority.
In Germany, Munich, Frankfurt and Stuttgart airports are also facing problems. The storms affected the operation of the country’s three main airports, resulting in interruptions and cancellations. According to the DPA news agency, 120 landings and takeoffs were canceled this morning at Frankfurt Airport alone.
Problems on the railways
The railways also present difficulties due to the snowfall. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, railway operator Deutsche Bahn warned about the weather conditions:
“Winter weather in the Frankfurt region has caused disruptions to long-distance services. This is leading to long delays and partial or complete cancellations of trains.”
Snowfall at Premier League stadiums
The blizzard also affected football stadiums. The stands at Anfield stadium, where the derby between Liverpool and Manchester United took place, were covered in snow before the start of the match.
