EU will not tolerate attacks on its borders, France tells Trump

The president-elect of the United States reinforced his desire to take control of Greenland, an island from Denmark, on Tuesday (7 January)

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said this Wednesday that the EU (European Union) will not allow other nations to attack its borders. The speech was in response to US President-elect Donald Trump’s comments about taking control of Greenland.

Donald Trump (Republican Party) on Tuesday (7.Jan.2025) that he did not rule out possible military action to take control of the Panama Canal and Greenland, when he was questioned by journalists in Palm Beach (Florida).

“Obviously there is no doubt that the European Union would let other nations of the world attack its sovereign borders, whoever they may be. We are a strong continent”told the radio according to .

However, Noel Barrot said he did not believe that the US would invade Greenland, an Arctic island that has been part of Denmark for over 600 years.

“If you are asking me if I think the United States will invade Greenland, my answer is no. But have we entered a time period where the fittest survive? So my answer is yes”he stated.

O Minister of Foreign Affairs added that the EU should not be intimidated, nor even overly concerned, but it should “to wake up” and become stronger.

EXPANSIONIST AGENDA

Trump’s comments show his expansionist agenda, two weeks before his inauguration as president on January 20 in Washington.

Regarding the desire to take control of the Panama Canal, the statement reinforces the Republican’s position on an alleged “theft” from the Panamanian authorities on trade tariffs. The canal passes between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

On Greenland, Trump has since 2019 in annexing the territory for US military and security reasons. The island currently belongs to Denmark, which has already denied the possibility of sale. The Republican promised that he would tax the European country if it did not transfer control of Greenland.

During his speech to journalists in Palm Beach (Florida), the Republican also made statements aiming at an expansionist policy in his second term. Trump said he would change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” and spoke again about the of Canada and as the 51st North American state.
