Measure allows women to have access to medication without having to undergo an in-person medical consultation
On Monday (May 4, 2026) reestablished mailing of the mifepristone pill – used in the majority of voluntary terminations of pregnancy in the country. Access to the medicine had been suspended last Friday (May 1) by a federal appeals court.
The order signed by Justice Samuel Alito temporarily allows women who wish to have abortions to obtain the pill at pharmacies or by mail, without the need for an in-person doctor’s appointment. The information is from the agency.
The laboratory, manufacturer of mifepristone, urgently appealed to the Supreme Court, stating that the federal appeals court’s decision provoked “an immediate confusion and a brutal disruption for manufacturers, distributors, providers, pharmacies and patients across the country”.
The Supreme Court’s measure will remain in effect until at least May 11 while the parties present their legal arguments.
Most abortions in the US are performed via medication. Some states governed by Democrats have laws that seek to provide legal protection to those who prescribe these medications through online consultations to patients in states where abortion is prohibited.
According to Associated Pressa recent report showed that in the 13 US states where abortion is prohibited at all stages of pregnancy, more women obtained prescription pill abortions through online consultations in 2025 than traveled to other states.
The State government took legal action to revoke the rules of the (Food and Drug Administration) – the North American drug regulatory agency – on the prescription of mifepristone. He argued that the policy undermined the state’s current abortion ban. The process also questioned the safety of the drug, approved 25 years ago and repeatedly considered safe and effective by the agency.
This lawsuit by the State of Louisiana is the latest by abortion opponents to restrict access to mifepristone.
