German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday rejected the words of US President-elect Donald Trump, who did not rule out the use of military or economic pressure to get Greenland or the Panama Canal under US administration. TASR informs about it based on the report of the DPA agency.

“The inviolability of borders is a fundamental principle of international law. In the final act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe from 1975, in the middle of the Cold War, the states of Europe and the countries of the then Eastern Bloc, the USA and the Soviet Union, again agreed on this basic principle. Borders cannot be moved by force,” Scholz said in a statement.

According to him, Russian President Vladimir Putin violated this principle by attacking Ukraine. Germany is on the side of Ukraine, supports its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the principle of inviolability of borders.

“The principle of inviolability of borders applies to every country, regardless of whether it lies to the east or west of us. It must be observed by every state, regardless of whether it is a small country or a very powerful state. It is a basic principle of international law and a fundamental part of what we call Western values,” stated Scholz.

The chancellor also said that he discussed Trump’s statements with European partners, who expressed “certain misunderstanding” about the current statements coming from the US.
