Faro joins the European mobilization against fascism, wars and climate collapse

Faro will be the stage, on January 18th, for one of the marches that mark the start of the international movement The Surgean emergency mobilization that aims to unite social movements against the rise of fascism, wars and climate collapse. In Portugal, Faro, Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Ponta Delgada and Braga also participate in this action that extends across 17 cities in 10 European countries.

In the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, the march will begin at 3pm, near Escola João de Deus (Liceu), and will continue to Jardim Manuel Bívar. The event will culminate in the old Fábrica de Cerveja, where there will be debates, music and moments of conviviality in the bar, promoting a space for reflection and sharing of ideas about social and environmental justice.

This internationalist movement represents a collective response to multiple global crises, defending life and social justice in a context that the organizers describe as a “state of emergency”. The rise of fascism, wars and climate change are seen as components of a global system of inequality, violence and exploitation.

As marchas do The Surge they aim to demand the immediate end of the genocide in Palestine, the dismantling of the fossil fuel industry by 2035 and the definitive defeat of fascism, considered one of the last authoritarian barriers of global capitalism.

The event also marks the beginning of an international popular offensive, coinciding with the eve of the inauguration of Donald Trump, now an ally of Elon Musk, as President of the United States, symbolizing, according to the movement, the materialization of policies of violence, racism and exploitation for the benefit of economic elites.

The demonstrations in Faro and other European cities are the first step in a continuous mobilization, with new plans and actions already being drawn up.

The movement The Surge invites communities and social movements to join together in this global fight for a more just and sustainable future.

In the Algarve, the actions will focus on Faro, January 11th and 18th:
