Croatians again elected Zoran Milanović as president

Milanovič was a candidate of the opposition Social Democratic Party of Croatia (SDP). As its leader, he was the Prime Minister of Croatia in 2011-2016.

The current Croatian president, Zoran Milanovič, was re-elected as head of state. In Sunday’s second round of elections, he won by a clear margin over Dragan Primorac, according to estimates. TASR informs about it according to a report of the AFP news agency.

Milanovic won 78 percent of the vote, while Primorac, backed by the ruling conservative Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), won 22 percent, according to preliminary results published by the country’s public broadcaster HRT.

There were 3.8 million eligible voters. They could cast their votes in 6,755 polling stations. Abroad, 105 polling stations were opened in 38 countries. The most were in Bosnia and Herzegovina (42) and in Germany (17). The activity of election commissions is monitored by 14,620 observers.

The Electoral Commission stated that at 16:30 CET the turnout was almost 35 percent – slightly lower than in the first round. Polling stations were open from 07:00 to 19:00.

In the first round of elections held on December 29, 2024, none of the eight candidates received a majority of votes; Milanovič was supported by 49 percent of the voters, Primorac received 19.6 percent of the votes.
