Faro Beach finally has a new bridge, putting an end to a process that dragged on for almost two decades and involved several stages and difficulties. The project, which was initially valued at 1.5 million euros, had a final cost of 8.5 million euros, reflecting the complexity and setbacks encountered along the way, which we will explore in this article.
The new infrastructure replaces the old bridge with alternating circulation, now offering an 11 meter wide deck, with space for vehicles to circulate in both directions, as well as areas dedicated to pedestrians and bicycles. The structure crosses the 180 meters that separate the airport road from the island of Praia de Faro.
A troubled journey
According to , the project began under the responsibility of the company Polis Ria Formosa, but its implementation would end up falling to the municipality of Faro, after two unsuccessful tenders. The initial budget was progressively adjusted: from the estimated 1.5 million, it rose to 2.5 million, followed by a contract signed for five million. Eventually, the work was awarded for 6.5 million euros.
During execution, additional complications increased the final cost. There is still work to be carried out, such as the removal of the old bridge, an intervention that will have to be carried out with caution due to its location in the Ria Formosa Natural Park. This operation could add an additional cost of one million euros.
Benefits for the community
The new bridge represents a significant improvement in access conditions to Faro Beach, facilitating traffic flow and promoting user safety. The expansion of roads will also allow progress with requalification works in the interior of the island, improving local infrastructure for residents and visitors.
