State companies allocated up to R$83.45 million for G20 and “Janjapalooza”

Banco do Brasil, Caixa and Petrobras invested up to R$18.5 million each; Itaipu contributed an additional R$15 million

Brazilian state-owned companies spent up to R$83.45 million to finance the G20 summit and the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty festival, nicknamed “Janjapalooza” for the active participation of First Lady Janja Lula da Silva in the organization.

The values ​​were obtained by the newspaper The State of S.Paulo via LAI (Access to Information Law) and involve transfers from Banco do Brasil, Caixa Econômica Federal, BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) and Petrobras.

The contributions were made possible through an agreement with the (Organization of Ibero-American States), responsible for organizing the events. Each state-owned company committed to allocate up to R$ 18.5 millionadding R$74 million.

Petrobras reported that it effectively invested R$12.95 million, while BNDES declared that its resources were exclusively applied to the G20 summit, without transfers to the festival. Outside of the main agreement, Itaipu Binacional allocated R$15 million.

Distribution

According to the documents, the preliminary budget provided for R$28.3 million for the music festival, R$27.2 million for the G20 social summit and R$13 million for the meeting of world leaders, the main objective of the meeting in Rio. of January.

Furthermore, the contracts included an administrative fee of 8% charged by OEI, which could reach up to R$5.4 million. In total, the organization’s costs would amount to R$74 million, divided between Caixa, Banco do Brasil, BNDES and Petrobras.

“Janjapalooza”

The 3-day musical event featured shows by national artists such as Alceu Valença, Ney Matogrosso, Daniela Mercury and Fafá de Belém.

“Janjapalooza” was an informal nickname given to the festival due to the involvement of First Lady Janja Lula da Silva in the organization. The event carried the theme of the Brazilian presidency of the G20 and took place simultaneously with the G20 Social Summit, from November 14th to 16th, in Rio.
