TikTok plans to disable the app for US users next Sunday (19), when a federal ban on the social media platform could come into force unless the Supreme Court blocks it, technology portal The Information reported. on Tuesday (14).

If the application is disabled for all US users, the result would be different from that determined by law.

The legislation would mandate a ban only on new downloads of TikTok from the Apple or Google app stores, while existing users would still be able to continue using the platform for some time.

According to a report from TikTok, people who try to open the app will see a pop-up message directing them to a website with information about the ban, people familiar with the matter explained.

The platform also plans to give users the option to download all of their data so they can take a record of their personal information with them, according to the document.

ByteDance did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

President Joe Biden in April last year signed a law requiring the parent company to sell its U.S. assets by Jan. 19, 2025 or face a nationwide ban.

The companies sought, at a minimum, a delay in implementation of the law, which they say violates the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment protection against government restriction of free speech.

said in a court filing last month that it estimates a third of the 170 million Americans who use its app would stop accessing the platform if the ban lasted a month.
