Europe is known for its stunning seaside cities, but not all coastal areas are enchanting with their beauty. Some places face problems such as pollution, excess tourists or simply an unattractive state of conservation. Although not all locations can have the charm of Cinque Terre, in Italy, the perception of beauty is always subjective. Even so, the British newspaper The Telegraph created a list of European coastal cities that it considers less attractive, with an Algarve city on the list.
One of the highlighted destinations is Kemer, a seaside resort in Türkiye, developed specifically for tourism. According to the Telegraph, “bland hotel complexes, water parks, anonymous restaurants and shops combine to produce a lifeless cross between the set of The Truman Show and a holiday camp in Pontins”. However, despite the criticism, around 300 thousand tourists visit Kemer annually, which shows that the resort continues to attract visitors.
Another destination mentioned, according to the magazine, is the Algarve city of Albufeira, described by the newspaper as full of “endless bars, lively nightlife and cheap accommodation in ugly, modern apartment blocks”, quite far from the old fishing village that existed there. . Although the description doesn’t do it any favors, Albufeira remains one of Portugal’s most popular tourist destinations, especially among British visitors.
The city is famous for its beaches, such as Praia dos Pescadores, which attracts tourists from all corners of the world, especially Brits, in the summer. Furthermore, the historic center maintains some of its original charm, with narrow streets and white houses typical of the region, contrasting with the more modern and touristy areas. Tourism is the main source of local income, contributing significantly to the Algarve economy.
Other coastal cities included in the list Telegraph they are:
- Monaco
- Ostia, Italy
- Ploče, Croatia
- Kemer, Türkiye
- La Línea de la Concepción, Spain
- Laganas, Zante, Greece
