Paraguayan law allows the executive branch to decree up to three extraordinary holidays per year
Paraguay’s victory over Germany, achieved through penalties at the 2026 World Cup, will be marked with a national holiday. The announcement was made by the Paraguayan president, Santiago Peña, who fulfilled the promise made before the departure.
A few minutes after the end of the meeting, the head of state took to social media to confirm the decision. “Paraguay never surrenders. Holiday…”, he wrote on social media.
“Today, an entire country is celebrating. We celebrate the victory of a team that represents what is deepest in our identity: the determination, faith and strength of a people who never give up”, he added in a publication where he sees himself signing the decree.
Giant Paraguay! 🇵🇾
Today a whole country celebrates. Celebrate the victory of a team that represents the deepest part of our identity: the grit, faith and strength of a people that never gives up.
Thank you, Albirroja, for giving us this immense joy and for uniting…
— Santiago Pena (@HolyPeña)
The possibility of declaring a rest day across the country had already been raised by the government spokesperson hours before the game. At the time, the president explained that the president would evaluate this hypothesis, admitting that the measure was on the table.
Paraguayan law allows the executive branch to decree up to three extraordinary holidays per year, which gives Santiago Peña a legal basis to follow through with the decision.
