Sinner loses first set in 14 games but advances to third round of Australian Open

Sinner joins his main rivals in the title race in the third round: Novak Djokovic (N.7), Alexander Zverev (N.2) and Carlos Alcaraz (N.3)

The Italian tennis player, number 1 in the world and defending title, qualified for the third round of this Thursday (16), by defeating Australian Tristan Schoolkate (N.173). Invited by the tournament organizers, Schoolkate was the first player to win a Sinner partial in 14 games. The Italian closed the game in 3 sets to 1, with scores of 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 and 6-3, in two hours and 45 minutes. “It’s always difficult playing against someone you don’t know very well. He played much better than me at the beginning, but I’m happy with my performance, although I can improve”, said the world number 1 at the end of the match.

Sinner’s next opponent will be the American Marcos Giron (N.46), who eliminated the Argentine Tomás Martín Etcheverry (N.38). The Italian joins his main rivals in the title fight in the third round: (N.7), (N.2) and (N.3).
