The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) called “ungrateful” the governors who criticized the state debt regularization program, sanctioned this week by the federal government.

“This week, we already approved the governors’ debt law, which is something that we owe, once again, to Rodrigo Pacheco, president of the Senate and the Ministry of Finance, which was an extraordinary thing,” said Lula.
“The governors, who are the five largest, who owe the most, who are ungrateful because they should be thanking the federal government and the National Congress, some were critical, because some do not want to pay. And from now on, they will pay”, stated the President of the Republic.
Some of the most indebted states in Brazil, such as Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul, are governed by politicians opposed to Lula. Romeu Zema (Novo-MG), Cláudio Castro (PL-RJ) e Eduardo Leite (PSDB-RS) criticized the sanctioned text. .
Lula stated that his administration did “what it had to do” in relation to the indebted states, but he also mentioned the entities of the Federation that are up to date with their accounts with the federal government.

“But we will worry about other states that shouldn’t. Because it’s very funny: the poor pay their debts, the rich don’t”, added Lula.
