Republican Donald Trump will officially become the 47th president of the United States on Monday, January 20, after taking the oath. He will return to the White House, which he fought for in the November elections with Vice President Kamala Harris, after four years. TASR informs about the course of the inauguration day according to the BBC station and the Reuters agency.

Musical performances and opening remarks will begin at 9:30 a.m. local time (3:30 p.m. CET) on the event’s main stage, located near the US Capitol building.. Trump and his future vice president, JD Vance, will be sworn in during a ceremony scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. local time (6:00 p.m. CET).

Trump will then deliver an inaugural address in which will present its goals for the next four years. He has said in interviews that his intention is for the speech to be encouraging and unifying. He will then move to the President’s Room, which is located near the Senate, to sign the relevant documents. After lunch with congressional leaders, he will be escorted from the Capitol building to the White House.

In the evening, Trump will attend three inaugural balls in Washington – the Commander-in-Chief’s Ball, the Freedom Ball and the All-Star Ball. He is expected to speak at all three.

Official events are paid for by Trump’s inaugural committee, which is responsible for covering all costs except for the swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol. It is covered by taxpayers. According to the media, this year the committee managed to collect more than 170 million dollars. In 2017, it was about 60 million less. According to local and federal authorities, more than 200,000 people could come to Washington on the day of the inauguration. According to the BBC, Trump’s supporters and protesters are apparently included among them.

The actual swearing-in ceremony itself will traditionally be attended by current US President Joe Biden together with First Lady Jill, as well as Vice President Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff. Former presidents and first ladies are often on the guest list. According to her office, Michelle Obama will miss this year’s inauguration. Ex-president Barack Obama is expected to come, as well as his predecessor George W. Bush and his wife Laura.

According to Reuters, Trump broke with customary practice and invited several foreign leaders to the ceremony. In the past, they did not participate in the inauguration for security reasons and instead sent diplomats. For example, Argentine President Javier Milei has confirmed his participation so far. Both Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni said they were considering it. Chinese President Xi Jinping has also received an invitation, but he is sending an envoy instead.

American media reported that American billionaires and technology entrepreneurs Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg should also be present at the ceremony. TikTok CEO Chou Shouzi is also expected to be there, just a day after a ban on the platform, owned by Chinese parent company ByteDance, could come into effect in the US.

As Reuters wrote, Inauguration Day is, according to tradition, largely devoted to pomp. One president is leaving the White House and another is moving into it. However, Trump also pledged that already on the first day of his work in the office, he signs a number of regulations that concern various matters – from US border security to oil and gas production.

Trump took office for the first time in 2017. He unsuccessfully tried to defend the mandate almost four years later, but was defeated by the current president Biden in the 2020 elections. Trump did not attend his inauguration.
