Rains in Santa Catarina take 1,315 people out of their homes and municipalities declare an emergency

As fortes They left 320 people homeless and another 995 displaced, the State Secretariat for Civil Protection and Defense reported this Saturday (18). Flooding, landslides and infrastructure damage caused 13 municipalities to declare an emergency, including the capital, Florianópolis.

The weather forecast for this Saturday is for more rain. According to Civil Defense, in the afternoon there will be the formation of areas of instability, rain showers, isolated thunderstorms, lightning, gusts of wind and possible hail, especially on the coast of Santa Catarina. On Sunday and Monday, the agency predicts the arrival of a cold front that will bring more intense storms.

The State Fire Department warns of the risk of landslides, mainly in Greater Florianópolis and on the north coast. As the soil is already saturated and there is a forecast of more rain this and the next few days, the corporation asks the population to stay alert.

“We recommend that people who live on slopes or areas already affected by the rains pay attention to signs of danger, such as cracks in the ground or movement of earth”, declared Lieutenant Colonel Zevir Aníbal Cipriano Júnior. “If you notice any sign of risk, it is essential to immediately seek a safe place.” Civil Defense reports that the risk of structural damage is high.

– Avoid crossing flooded streets and submerged bridges;
– Look for safe shelters;
– Avoid risk areas, such as hills and slopes;
– Pay attention to leaning trees and cracks in posts and walls, which may indicate a risk of falling.

The municipalities of Biguaçu, Camboriú, Itapema, Porto Belo, Tijucas and Balneário Camboriú received emergency support from Civil Defense. In Biguaçu, the highest volume of rain was recorded: 434.8 mm in 48 hours. In Florianópolis, the accumulated rainfall is 375.6 mm.

The Fire Department reported that it mobilized five task forces; 433 incidents have been attended to in 37 municipalities since the beginning of the crisis. 330 military and community firefighters, 94 vehicles and 48 boats are employed in the action.
