Thousands of people, the vast majority of them women, demonstrated this Saturday despite the intense cold in Washington to protest against the president-elect, Donald Trump, and his imminent inauguration, scheduled for next Monday.
The People’s March has been called by several political organizations and will end in front of the Lincoln Memorial around 3:00 p.m. in a demonstration that brought together some 50,000 people, according to the convening groups.
The objective is to build a common front against Trump’s new presidency, demanding issues such as gender justice, bodily autonomy, democracy or immigration.
“It is very healing to be here today with all of you in solidarity and unity in the face of what is going to be horrible extremism,” The leader of Reproductive Freedom for All, Mini Timmaraju, has highlighted, according to the Fox News network.
The security forces have deployed an important device, although a repeat of the 2017 riots is not expected, when more than 200 people were arrested in several days of clashes.
Trump is scheduled to arrive this Saturday at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland and attend a fireworks show at his golf course in Virginia. A reception and dinner for Vice President-elect JD Vance is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
Already on Sunday there will be a Trump event at the Capital One Arena, in downtown Washington, with the presence of allies of the president-elect such as billionaire Elon Musk. There will also be performances by The Village People, Kid Rock o Billy Ray Cyrus.
