and Laura Siegemund were eliminated from the by the pair of Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealander Erin Routliffe with a defeat by 2 sets to 1, on Sunday night (19), with partial scores of 7/6 (7/5), 3/6 and 4/6. Now, the winners will face Japanese Miyu Kato and Mexican Renata Zarazua, who beat Asia Muhammad and Demi Schuurs, in a comeback, by 2 sets to 1. The match that took down Bia and Laura was fierce. They took the first set in the tie-break, in a great turnaround. Dabrowski and Routliffe opened up a three-game lead, but the Brazilian and the German tied. Even in the final game, there was a lot of balance, ending with 7/5.
Dabrowski and Routliffe started the second set better. This time, however, they did not give Bia and Laura room to react in the same way. The Canadian and the New Zealander managed to open a two-game lead and maintained the difference until closing the set with 6/3. The third set started, once again, with Dabrowski and Routliffe in front. They opened two games, but Bia and Laura managed to pull it off. From 2 to 2 onwards, every game won by one pair, the other tied. That changed after 4-4. Dabrowski and Routliffe were relentless in the last two games, closing at 40-15 twice and securing the victory of the set and the match, with 6/4.
The Canadian is third in the women’s doubles ranking, one position behind the New Zealander. Laura Siegeman is 19th, while Bia Haddad is ranked number 60. In the history of the doubles tournament, however, the Brazilian has a better record. His best record was the final in 2022, alongside Casaque Anna Danilina. Laura’s best result was the quarterfinals last year, alongside Czech Barbora Krejciková.
In the individual, Bia lost to Russian Veronika Kudermetova by 2 sets to 0, in the early hours of Saturday, and fell in the third phase. If she won, the Brazilian could reach a historic milestone and become the first representative of the country to reach the round of 16 of the Australian Open in the open era of tennis – since the sport admitted professional players. Two other pairs with Brazilians competed in the women’s tournament. On Saturday night, Luisa Stefani and the American Peyton Stearns fell to the French Kristina Mladenovic and the Chinese Shuai Zang. Previously, Luisa and Peyton themselves had eliminated Ingrid Martins and the Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu.
