A cousin of Flamengo defender Léo Pereira was one of the six killed in a police operation in Ponta Grossa, Paraná, last Friday (17). The man was identified as Wesley Henrique Gomes Borges, 31 years old. The information was confirmed to the Band Paraná portal by the State Security Secretariat for Public Security (Sesp).

Léo Pereira was in the United States, participating in the red-black club’s pre-season, but was released to “deal with a personal problem”. He returned to Brazil immediately after receiving the news. He mourned his cousin’s death on social media.

The operation was carried out to combat a criminal organization specializing in bank and armored vehicle robberies. The suspects were found in a farm, where there was an arsenal of firearms, bulletproof vests, chargers, license plates and a cloned car. Police stated that they were greeted by gunfire upon arriving at the scene, which led to an armed confrontation.

At a press conference, Hudson Teixeira, Secretary of Public Security of Paraná, said that the death of the six suspects “is not a reason to celebrate”, but emphasized that the operation prevented possible robberies in the central region of the state.

“It’s no reason to celebrate. But we avoided it, luckily, thank God. We trained for it, we’re prepared for it. It’s what we don’t want, but we avoided robberies in the Central Region of the State and also robberies of armored vehicles The choice of confrontation, obviously, was made by those people who were there. [metralhadora calibre] point 50 was posted in the window, as our police officers approached”, he declared.

According to the secretary, the six dead were part of a criminal organization. Two of them would be escaped from the prison system and linked to a faction. “They are part of an armored car robbery gang and from Novo Cangaço [organizações criminosas que tomam cidades para cometer assaltos] also, not only in Paraná, but throughout the country”.
