The tension between the employees of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and the president of the organization, Marcio Pochmann, has a new development this Monday, 20th, with the circulation of an open letter that accuses the management of the organization of having bias authoritarian, political and media. The letter, to which Broadcast (Grupo Estado’s real-time news system) had access, should be published this Monday, sources said.

Signatures already exceed a hundred, the majority of which are from the organization’s managers – coordinators and managers -, and the expectation is to reach 134, said a person close to the employees.

The escalation – in the middle of the São Sebastião holiday, patron saint of the city of Rio de Janeiro, where the institute’s headquarters are located – gives yet another indication of the severity of the internal crisis experienced by the organization.

In the text, the employees express “support and solidarity” with the directors who asked for dismissal because they did not agree with Pochmann’s management. They also express solidarity with the IBGE union, “which has also been constantly attacked by the current management”.

Furthermore, they defended the quality of the work carried out by the body, stressing: “we are absolutely committed to the quality of the statistical and geoscientific information that we have produced to date; The data produced at IBGE follows reliable and international principles and methodologies”.

And they demand the immediate halt to the work of the IBGE+ Foundation, created by the current management as an alternative to demands for financial resources. The employees criticize the creation of the foundation and the use of the IBGE name, “without there being a broad discussion about the possible risks to our autonomy and the reliability of the data”.

“The organizational climate is deteriorating and leaders are encountering serious difficulties in carrying out their duties. Therefore, we see no other way than to request the support of society and the attention of the competent authorities to resolve the crisis that has arisen”, concluded the employees.
