Team has its worst start to the English Championship as home team in 131 years

Manchester United coach, Portuguese Ruben Amorim, made a strong outburst about his team’s current situation this season. The team lost the 10th match of the English Championship last Sunday (19), when they fell to Brighton, 3-1, at Old Trafford, in the 22nd round of the competition.
The result took the Red Devils to 13th place in the Premier League, with 26 points. This, in fact, is United’s worst start to the tournament as a home team in 131 years, with six defeats in their first 12 home games.
“We are, perhaps, the worst team in the history of Manchester United”, said Ruben Amorim after the match. “I’m saying this not to give headlines to the press, but because we have to recognize this and change this situation. Imagine what this means for the fans, imagine what it means for me”, added the coach.
In the 1893/94 season, the team – which was still called Newton Heath and played at the Bank Street stadium – was defeated in seven of its first 12 home games in English. They finished the competition relegated to the second division, in last place. In 1902, it became Manchester United and, eight years later, in 1910, Old Trafford was opened.
“It’s difficult to explain. We have to recognize the moment and not get around the problem. Everyone here is performing below expectations. No matter what the circumstances, we are performing below expectations and we have to accept that”, said Amorim.
“It is unacceptable for any Premier League club to lose so many games… Imagine Manchester United. It is a very difficult time, but we have to continue. We have to continue. There is no other way. We need to suffer”, he continued.
The team returns to the field this Thursday (23), when they face Rangers, at 5pm, at home, for the 7th and penultimate round of the Europa League qualifying phase. In 7th place, with 12 points, United have a chance to confirm direct passage to the round of 16.
