Minister of Environment and Climate Change criticizes the US president’s decision to withdraw the country from the Paris Agreement
The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, criticized the speech given by the President of the United States, Donald Trump (Republican Party), on Monday (20 January 2025), during the inauguration ceremony. According to her, the speech confirms “more pessimistic prognoses about the challenging times to come” throughout the North American’s mandate.
“Although it was already expected, based on what he defended in the presidential campaign, I see with great concern the announcement that the president intends to end the Green New Deal, resume the North American automotive industry without giving priority to electric cars and valuing the use of fossil fuels”said the minister, in a note released by Economic Value.
In his speech, Trump said he will fill the strategic reserves “to the top” and export energy around the world. “We will be a rich nation again. And that liquid gold we have beneath our feet is what will help us do that. Let’s end this electric vehicle mandate to save our country’s autoworkers again.”these.
The minister also stated that the announcements “go against the grain” defending the energy transition, valuing renewable energy sources and combating climate change. Regarding the Paris Agreement, he highlighted that the United States is the 2nd largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world, and therefore has “great and urgent responsibilities to fulfill”.
Marina Silva also highlighted the Joe Biden administration’s position on renewable energy, highlighting that “restructuring the energy matrix and reducing the cost of energy, were designed to create jobs and increase the country’s energy security”.
“These will be challenging times for the whole world. It remains to face them with information, commitment to life and political negotiation skills”he stated.
