Congolese Yoane Wissa, Brentford’s Premier League standout with 10 goals, is expected to appear in court in Vannes, France, to testify against a woman who allegedly threw acid in his face and tried to kidnap the athlete’s newborn daughter.
The attack took place in 2021, when the attacker played for Lorient. At the time, Wissa needed to undergo a surgical procedure to avoid losing her vision.
The hearing must last four days, and the athlete must appear after missing the first day.
The woman, identified only as Laetitia P., allegedly attacked another woman in Vannes the following day in July 2021. The child was later found unharmed.
The accused faces up to 30 years in prison for attempted murder, child kidnapping and attempted kidnapping.
Yoane Wissa’s lawyer, Karim Morand-Lahouazi, said that the player is still suffering the consequences of this attempted kidnapping and attack.
“Nowadays, Wissa and his wife feel safe in England. They feel they are safe from danger. Fortunately he did not lose his sight, and it was only thanks to his reaction that his daughter was not taken away. He needed significant time to try and recover. Things were not easy.”
