On Monday, Trump pledged to immediately overhaul America’s trade system, vowing to “impose tariffs and taxes on foreign countries to enrich our (American) citizens.”
US President Donald Trump warned the European Union on Wednesday night that he will impose tariffs on it if the trade imbalance with the United States is not corrected. At the same time, he threatened China with the imposition of a ten percent tariff, which can be applied as early as February 1. TASR informs on the basis of a report by the AFP agency.
“They treat us very, very badly, that’s why they won’t avoid tariffs. If we don’t do that, we won’t get fairness,” Trump declared in the White House before representatives of the media a day after his inauguration.
Trump said the previous day that the EU does not import enough American products, so he will “fix it” by imposing tariffs on imported products or pressure to increase the volume of purchases of oil and natural gas.
On Wednesday night, the US president again threatened to impose a 10 percent tariff on products from China because “they send fentanyl to Mexico and Canada.” He stated February 1 as the date of possible introduction, writes AFP.
Trump previously set the same date for imposing 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico, which he accused of failing to stop illegal migration and the smuggling of fentanyl into the US. According to official data, Mexico, China and Canada are the largest exporters of products to the US, AFP explains.
