LUANA TAKAHASHI – The service celebrating Donald Trump’s inauguration as president of the United States became a topic on social media after Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde asked for mercy for migrants and LGBTQIA people this Tuesday (21).

The president attended a mass at the Washington National Cathedral in celebration of his inauguration. The ceremony was led by Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde, a high-ranking member of the Episcopal Church – a branch of Protestantism.

In her speech, the bishop reprimanded the new leader over the decrees he signed against LGBTQ+ people and migrants. “I ask you to have mercy, Mr. President. There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and Independent families,” he said.

She also spoke about the fear that is “being felt across the country”. Mariann defended foreign workers who “may not be citizens or may not have adequate documentation (…) but the vast majority of migrants are not criminals”, he argued.

Trump attacked the religious leader on his social media. “In addition to his inappropriate comments, the sermon was very boring and uninspiring. She’s not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology!” he posted on his Truth Social account.

Republican called her a “radical leftist”. He stated that she had an “unpleasant tone, was unconvincing and unintelligent.”

WHO IS THE BISHOP?

Mariann is 65 years old and an Episcopal bishop in Washington. Her biography on the diocese’s website says she serves as the spiritual leader of 86 Episcopal congregations and ten Episcopal schools in the District of Columbia and four Maryland counties.

She was the first woman to be elected as a diocesan of Washington, in 2011. The religious leader also serves as president of the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation, which oversees the ministries of Washington National Cathedral and Cathedral schools.

Mariann is married, mother of two adult children and grandmother. “When she’s not working, you’ll often find her riding her bike, spending time with her family, or cooking dinner for friends,” her bio reports.

Bishop Budde is an advocate for racial equity, gun violence prevention, immigration reform, and full inclusion of LGBTQIA+ people. “She believes that Jesus calls all who follow him to fight for justice and peace, and to respect the dignity of every human being”, describes the Church.

According to American radio station NPR, she is known for being critical of Trump. In 2020, she wrote an op-ed for The New York Times criticizing the then-president for using police to evacuate Lafayette Square, near St. John’s Church, amid protests over the death of George Floyd.
