A 68-year-old recreational fisherman was seriously injured after falling from a cliff in the municipality of Aljezur, district of Faro, late this Saturday afternoon. According to the National Maritime Authority (AMN), the victim was in a difficult-to-access area in Ponta da Atalaia, where he was fishing when the accident occurred. The alert was received at 5:17 pm, through the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center, which immediately mobilized rescue teams.
Members of the Lagos Maritime Police local command were called to the scene, as well as the Aljezur Volunteer Firefighters and an INEM helicopter. After an initial intervention carried out by firefighters on the ground, the fisherman, who had suspected fractures and was in a serious condition, needed to be transported by helicopter to a hospital unit. The operation took place in the early evening and involved rescuing the victim from a rocky area, making air support essential to ensure safe removal.
