Fall number of trans people murdered in Brazil in 2024

Death records of people with such gender identities retreated from 145 to 122 in 1 year

In 2024, 122 trans and transvestites were murdered in Brazil, and 5 were human rights advocates. According to the latest edition of (PDF – 5MB) of (National Association of Transvestites and Transsexuals), launched on January 27, this number is 16% lower than in 2023, when it was known of 145 murders of people with such gender identities.

Despite the fall, the association says that although last year’s outcome was also below an average of 125 murders per year, obtained from the 2008 to 2024 records, the difference is little and the numbers are very close.

One of the victims of 2024 that fits the category of human rights defender was an alternate councilwoman. Another had already applied for a political office.

Still in relation to the characteristics of the victims, the anthra points out that 117 assasin victims, 95.9% of the total, were transvestites and transsexual women. Only 5 were trans men and transmasculine people.

Antra recalls in the report that the identification of cases contained in the survey runs parallel to official follow -up, precisely because it does not contemplate occurrences with victims LGBTQIA+ satisfactorily. “The problem of underground is evident. When news reaches newspapers, it would be natural to imagine that these cases would be registered in the responsible bodies, such as police stations, IML (Legal Medical Institutes) or Public Security Secretariats. But reality shows the opposite ”says.

The document also says that “Data on these violence simply do not appear or are inconsistent, as the Brazilian Public Security Forum has pointed out, which criticizes the absence of information about LGBTQia+ people and the great discrepancies between official numbers and what we see in the news. Although this scenario has been improving in recent years, there is no disaggregated data on the murder of trans people ”.

Even with the absence of qualified official data, Antra confirmed at least 1,179 murders of trans, transvestites, transmasculine and non -binary people. The years with the highest concentration of cases were 2017, with 179, and 2020, with 175. It was in 2017 that the organization began to conduct the detailed research.

As for the order of states with worst scenario in 2024, São Paulo leads, responding for 16 murders. Minas Gerais is in 2nd place, with 12 occurrences, and Ceará in 3rd, totaling 11. “In the states of Acre, Rio Grande do Norte and Roraima there were no records of murders in 2024. In addition, a case was identified whose location could not be determined. It is noteworthy that at least 68% (83 cases) happened outside the state capitals, in inner cities ”adds the Antra.

In the list, which takes into account the records accumulated by each federative unit from 2017 to 2024, São Paulo remains at the top, with 151 cases. Ceará, however, rises to 2nd position with 107 murders, and Bahia occupies the 3rd with 97.

The report also places Brazil in relation to other countries:

“By observing the first year in which the NGO (non -governmental organization) started organizing the global ranking in 2008, 58 murders had been reported. The year 2024 showed an increase of 110% compared to 2008, the year that presented the lowest number of reported cases, leaving 58 murders in 2008 to 122 in 2024. above when we observe the initial data of analysis ”.
