An armed man was shot by US Secret Service agents (USSS) outside the White House on Sunday, according to the agency.

The US President is in Florida and was not at the moment.

According to the head of communications of the secret service, Anthony Guglielmi, the USSS received information about a “suicidal individual” who was traveling from Indiana to Washington. Guglielmi said in a statement that members of the secret service saw a person who corresponded to the description near and found a parked car.

“When the police approached, the individual took a firearm and an armed confrontation happened during which shots were fired by our agents,” said Guglielmi. The case happened shortly after midnight at local time.

The person was taken to the hospital and the health condition remains unknown.

The US secret service stated that there were no injuries among the agency members.

The Investigations team of the DC’s Metropolitan Police Internal Affairs Division will lead the investigation, Guglielmi added.

A CNN contacted the department.
