Former player Ronaldo Nazário announced that he gave up the candidacy for the presidency of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).
The decision comes after difficulties he encountered to obtain support from the presidents of the state federations, some of them close to the current president of the CBF, Ednaldo Rodrigues.
In a publication on social networks, Ronaldo said that “if the majority with decision -making understands that Brazilian football is in good hands, it doesn’t matter with my opinion.”
The intention to apply for the position had been made official by the former athlete at the end of last year. At the time, he criticized the current management of the CBF and said he would fight to recover the respect of Brazilian football.
In the publication of Wednesday (12), Ronaldo said that the first steps ahead of the confederation “would be in the direction of giving voice and space to clubs, as well as listening to federations for improvements in competition and sport development in their states.”
In his first contact with the 27 affiliates, however, he said he found “23 closed doors.” The former striker reported that the federations refused to receive him, “on the grounds of satisfaction with the current management and support for reelection.”
In order to apply for the CBF presidency, Ronaldo needs to obtain the support of at least four state federations and four series from the series A or B.
In addition, the electoral college is formed by the 27 federations and the 40 clubs of the two main series of Brazilian football. The decision, however, always ends in the hands of federations, whose votes have weight 3 in the elections, against weight 2 of the first division clubs, and weight 1 of the clubs of the second.
“Therefore, it is clear that there is no way to compete,” said the former box 9 of the Brazilian team. “Most of the state leaders support the acting president, it is their right and I respect, regardless of my convictions.”
