‘He wanted to get him out of the game’
Erdogan’s 54 -year -old political opponent, was arrested on Wednesday, facing allegations of bribery and aid to a terrorist group (PKK), a move that the opposition condemned as a “attempted coup” and which caused a first round of European leaders.
In an interview, Ozgur Ozel, president of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) to which Imoglu belongs to, said that Erdogan was afraid that he would deal with the mayor in a vote and wanted to “play” him.
He said that any move that would prevent Imamoglou from nominating in the next election would boost the support of the opposition, adding that the CHP would set him a candidate on Sunday in the scheduled qualifiers.
“We believe that Imamoglu will win. If he is obstructed his candidacy, we believe that this will turn into much greater support, “Ozel told Reuters in his first interview with foreign media after detention.
