The US wants to continue to promote the disarmament of North Korea

US and DPRK relations continue to be complicated. Hope for dialogue encounters the stubbornness of both sides on nuclear weapons.

The US continues to pursue a policy aimed at nuclear disarmament of North Korea (DPRK). A spokesman for the US Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed this for Jonhap, TASR reports.

The spokesman thus commented on the question about the recent statements of the North Korean leader Kim Jong-una, who indicated his willingness to negotiate with the United States if they stop insist that the DPRK gives up nuclear weapons.

“We can confirm the US policy aimed at complete denuclearization of North Korea,” said US diplomacy spokesman.

DPRK does not want to give up weapons

For the DPRK, according to Kim Jong-una, the acquisition of nuclear weapons is a question of survival due to serious threats from the US and South Korea. Recent Washington and Seoul offers for dialogue refused as insincere, because their basic intention – weaken North Korea and overthrow her government – remains unchanged.

The leader also said that he still retains “pleasant memories” of US President Donald Trump, whom he met three times during his term. At the same time, however, he stressed that North Korea would not give up nuclear weapons.

Trump showed that he would like to meet Kim Jong-una this year. According to the South Korean agency, this contributed to speculation that he could try to resume relations with the DPRK during the Summit of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, which will take place on October 31 to 1 November in Kyongja, South Korea.
