Operation will be resumed at the end of the year
Searches for the MH370 flight from Malaysia Airlines, which disappeared with 239 people over the Indian Ocean in March 2014, were interrupted, Malaysia Minister of Transportation Anthony Loke announced on Thursday.
British Ocean Infinity, which started the third search in late February last year, “interrupted the operation for now and will resume it later this year,” Loke said at a press conference.
The MH370 flight disappeared on March 8, 2014, about 40 minutes after the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, to Beijing, when he left the Malay Airspace and entered Vietnamese airspace, diverting his route to the southern Indian Ocean, without the causes being known.
On board the Boeing 777 were 153 Chinese, 50 Malayses (12 of which were part of the crew), seven Indonesians, six Australians, five Indians, four French, three Americans, two neozelands, two Ukrainians, two Canadians, two Iranians, one Russian, one Dutch and a Taiwanese.
Malaysia, China and Australia initially performed a joint search of about 120,000 square kilometers in the Indian Ocean, but ended operations in January 2017 without traces of the device.
Ocean Infinity also tried to locate the plane in an area of about 100,000 square kilometers between January and June 2018, unsuccessfully.
In February last year, the company pointed out that searches are based on credible information and will focus on an area that “has been neglected” during the last mission, so it is confident that this time there will be “positive results.”
