How to decipher the code on the egg?

Each egg in the European Union must be marked with a special code, which informs about the type of farming, country of origin and the manufacturer’s identifier. The first digit of this code is the most important because it defines the chicken farming system:

  • 0 – Ecological farming eggs: chickens have access to open space, are fed with organic feed, and the density in the henhouse is limited.
  • 1 – free -range eggs: chickens have access to open space during the day.
  • 2 – mulch farming eggs: chickens stay in hen rooms, where they can move freely on the litter (e.g. straw, sawdust).
  • 3 – Eggs from cage farming: chickens stay in cages.

On the egg label you will also find the YY-AABBCCDD code, which is recorded immediately after the digit determining the method of breeding the chickens. The first two letters (in this case YY) are a record of a country of origin. Further letters contain further details – the voivodship, poviat code and the company code.

When buying eggs, check if they are all fresh. Of course, avoid buying. Experts indicate that never add eggs directly to food. It is best to first stick the egg into a bowl and check if it is fresh. In this way, we will avoid the risk of destroying the whole dish and possible intoxication. If the egg has a strange, pink color, throw it away immediately. This may mean bacteria. You should not eat eggs in which protein and yolk do not stick together.
