Document says that the European Commission should apply retaliatory rates on US products from May 16

The European Commission will propose 25% rates on general imports from the United States. A document, obtained by the portal, indicates that the EU (European Union) will retaliate US President Donald Trump (Republican) in two phases: 1st with general rates from May 16, and another starting on December 1.

According to the document, general rates include products from different sectors such as diamonds, floss, sausages, walnuts and soy. Then phase rates seek a response to 25% tariffs on European cars and automotive parts, in force since April 3.

In the list of products to be taxed by the EU, there is no whiskey bourbon, wine and dairy products from the US. The block and other products, but retreated after Trump.

Although planned, European retaliation still undergoes adjustments, as the European bloc seeks a consensus on the application of tariffs. The EU, which encompasses 27 countries, should still analyze the proposals regarding the rates of the 2nd phase, since each member of the bloc has requirements and requests based on the needs of the industry itself.

Germany and France, who have a stronger automotive sector, want higher retaliation, while other EU countries, such as Spain and Ireland, seek a more moderate response not to climb the trade war.

The European Commission will also vote for the document with 25%tariffs. If approved, the measure will be Europe’s first effective retaliation against US tariffs. The block promised a response to 25% taxes on steel and aluminum to April 1, but postponed because it is necessary to need a “dialogue” with the US government.
