CPTM (Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos) expanded its business beyond railway tracks.
Last Friday (29), the management company (Republicanos) signed a contract that could exceed R$ 10 million for CPTM Serviços, an arm of the São Paulo state-owned company, to carry out a type of audit of the new train concession.
The contract was signed with PY13 Participações S/A, a company controlled by Nova Via Participações, which took over passenger rail transport in the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro — in February, the consortium, the only competitor, has been in judicial recovery since 2021.
According to CPTM, the contract provides for the company to carry out a technical diagnosis of the Rio de Janeiro line.
Valid for 180 days, the agreement provides that the São Paulo company will, among other things, diagnose the inventory and liabilities assumed by the new consortium.
The value of the base remuneration is R$9,009,804.43. 34 technical products will be developed. The amount could reach R$ 10,150,284.53 if the Rio concessionaire contracts additional services on demand, such as laboratory analyses, noise measurements and survey of costs for issuing environmental licenses.
“CPTM Serviços projects its operational excellence beyond São Paulo by taking on the technical diagnosis of the railway network in Rio de Janeiro”, says the president of the state-owned company, Michael Cerqueira.
This is the second agreement with the neighboring state. In 2024, a contract was signed with Central Logística, an entity linked to the Secretariat of Transport and Urban Mobility of the State of Rio de Janeiro, to prepare technical studies and measure costs for the operation, maintenance and stabilization of the railway passenger transport system in Rio de Janeiro.
The state of Rio de Janeiro has a network of 270 km, divided into five branches, three extensions and 104 stations, transporting an average of 300 thousand passengers daily.
The expansion of new businesses gained momentum with the concession of São Paulo’s metropolitan train branches — only line 10-turquoise was not privatized.
The company, for example, prepared the functional project for the , which provides a railway connection between the river and Vale do Ribeira, 223.6 km long.
Created in September 2024, CPTM Serviços has since signed 13 contracts with governments and private companies, according to Cerqueira (the coastal project is not part of this arm of the company).
The agreements are for consultancy, train simulators, training, project and contract management, media and retail projects; and railway tourism, among others.
One of them is the preparation of the draft systems for the VLT (Light Rail Vehicle), from the City of São Paulo for the center of the capital of São Paulo, which the Ricardo Nunes (MDB) management has already said should change to VLE, with another type of electric model.
CPTM will also be able to provide engineering projects.
Tarcísio recently signaled that he will put the brakes on concession plans for the last line under public management. The priority now, according to him, is to modernize line 10, with a project changed by the company itself.
Currently, lines 11-Coral, 12-Safira and 13-Jade are under concession. Until July, the Trivia Trens concessionaire will carry out operation and maintenance tasks under the supervision of CPTM. Full private management will be in July 2027.
Last Monday (1st), Tarcísio stated that, at the moment, he has no plans to grant the lines in a new signal against privatizations in .
